More than 2.7 million men and women have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. For many, the return home is fraught with challenges:
Veterans of past conflicts represent 8% of the total U.S. population, yet 30% of the homeless population. Currently, government funding serves only 1 of 10 veterans in need.
Whether they served in the Vietnam War, the first Gulf War, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan or in peacetime, thousands of service members return with both physical and psychological scars. For many, reintegrating into their communities and their former lives proves impossible.
91¹ú²ú×ÔÅÄ boasts more than 60 years of experience working with Chicago’s most at-risk populations. Integrating our award-winning, evidence-based practices and strategic partnerships, the Veterans Project includes homeless outreach, housing services, supported employment, peer-driven supports, substance use treatment, integrated physical and mental health services, and trauma-based therapies.
If you served in the military and you are having a hard time coping with your mental illness, trauma, or issues such as homelessness, substance use, unemployment, etc., please contactÌýFernando Valles,ÌýDirector of the Veterans Project, at (773) 537-3154 or the Veterans Project intake line at (773) 572- 5321.
Women Veterans Health Initiative
Women veterans are a rapidly growing population that faces a range of complex challenges.ÌýMany are single mothers who have experienced Military Sexual Trauma (MST), and are now the fastestÌýgrowing segment of the homeless population. These harsh realities have only recently started toÌýenter the national consciousness. Despite the growing body of research on women veterans,Ìýthere remains a woeful lack of services catered to their unique needs. The 91¹ú²ú×ÔÅÄÌýWomen Veterans Health Initiative raises the bar for women-designed, veteran-focused services.ÌýBy providing a women-only one-stop shop for rapid housing placement, employment andÌýeducation services, benefits linkage, trauma therapies, substance use treatments, child care resources,Ìýprimary care, and psychiatry, 91¹ú²ú×ÔÅÄ has the opportunity to provide unparalleled service.
Supportive Services for Veteran Families
The 91¹ú²ú×ÔÅÄ Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program collaborates with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to end veteran homelessness. We serve veteran families who are homeless or at risk for imminent homelessness and have very low income (less than 50% area median income). The 91¹ú²ú×ÔÅÄ SSVF team is comprised of a program director, SSVF program manager, SSVF assistant program manager, community support workers, intake coordinator, housing locator, financial specialist, healthcare navigator, and employment specialist. The team offers a myriad of services including linkage to VA and public benefits, case management, budgeting assistance, intensive housing location, drug & alcohol counseling, mental health/therapeutic services, and employment assistance. All of these services are tailored to each individual veteran family’s needs.
